In our product and service portfolio, we are combining materials know-how with modern methods of product development and efficient project management.
The past has clearly shown that a separation of SMA competence and product development was not as successful as desired. One outstanding fact is the relation between granted SMA patents and available mass products based on SMA. Today, only few series-produced solutions beside medical applications face more than over 10.000 SMA patents of, in many cases, renowned companies. This gap between patents and products still exists due to several reasons, but mostly the lack of know-how about the use and properties of SMA. Hence, it is our goal to understand Shape Memory Alloys in its technological depth and transfer this know-how into products that work.
In order to achieve this, we have identified and established all essential competences and methods and inserted them into our present product development strategy.
We control the complete process chain for the production of SMA components. Beside the melting metallurgy, we use different forming processes for the fabrication of several semifinished products. The next step is the configuration of the application-specific final product. The freedom to adjust every step in our process chain enables us to manufacture individual SMA components for you.
We concentrate on NiTi-SMA, because they are distinctly superior to the usual SMA in their properties. This is why our portfolio includes many binary, ternary and quaternary SMA. From these, we manufacture cast parts, rods or tubes, wires, sheets and springs and other application-specific components. When selecting the alloys, the necessary functionalities of the later application have to be understood precisely.
Therefore, an exchange of information between Ingpuls and the customer is absolutely necessary. We developed a standardized query process to collect all necessary information for us as timesaving as possible.
For mutual protection of know-how, as first step, we conclude a non-disclosure agreement with our project partners.
In collaboration with our partners we develop different systems (actuator systems, clamping systems, damping systems) based on SMA.
For actuating systems in which SMA components are controlled through resistance heating, we developed an Electronic Management System (short EMS).
Our basic module can be adapted according to specific requirements. If necessary, the possibility to change the board architecture exists. The interfaces of the electronic can be adjusted so that the EMS can be integrated in superordinated systems or assembly groups.
The systems takes over the appropriate supplying to avoid overheating.
Positioner systems can either head for certain positions or can be switched/operated continuously. This doesn`t only makes it possible to realize on / off functions, but also allows a continuous regulation to any position.

The "Technology Starter Kit Shape Memory Alloys" includes 10 different SMA components for you to gain initial practical experience in using SMA.
Wires, springs, sheet stripes and shapes parts made of superelastic NiTi (Af<20°C) as well as actuator material (As>50°C) offer the possibility to get to know the different characteristics and operating principles.
We develop products or systems in a structured process. From the idea, through prototype, to the functioning prototype, we take care of all tasks. In individual cases we are also able to use our network of reliable suppliers.
The development process normally consists of several phases based on milestones. When feasibility has been checked, first concepts can be designed, while the situation of property right can be analyzed. The final concept will be constructively elaborated and the first prototype can be produced.
The heart of our systems always is a SMA component. For that we define and produce the necessary SMA material and configurate the component. We use drive electronics for active regulated systems. Based on our EMS they can be adapted in accordance to the requirements. After starting the initial operation of the prototypes the achieved functionalities are measured quantitatively.
We also develop test devices in-house according to the components. They allow automatically testing to perform long-term tests.
As an innovative company, we use latest methods of material and surface characterisation. Different mechanic, thermic or thermomechanical analyses are used: temperated tensile tests, measurement of hardness, nanoindentation or even DSC analysis.
For the evaluation of our SMA, as for most metallic materials, microscopic examination is often necessary. For this we use light microscopy or scanning electron microscopy. In special cases we also use transmission electron microscopy. Different chemical analyses are used to determine the purity of our melts. Amongst others we identify their content of carbon, oxygen or hydrogen to guarantee a reproducible quality.
With special developed hardware we quantify the electronic characteristics of our SMA components to calibrate our drive electronics to it.
In addition to the common material analyses, our developments often require component specific functional testing. These take place in specifically developed testing devices and machines. They are equipped with latest drive systems, sensors as well as automated data collection.
Each May and November, a SMA User Seminar is offered to our clients. During a one-day compact lecture our SMA experts teach you the most important basics for SMA usage.
In 4 topics we work on the most important aspects to successful develop the products of tomorrow. Next to relevant material-scientific basics, we describe current characterisation methods for SMA to ensure a reproducible quality for manufacturer and end user.
The second part of the seminar focuses on application specific questions. From dimensioning the service life and functional stability, over system integration to electronic controlling the most relevant points of product development will be introduced.
